What is Jesmonite?

Jesmonite is an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional resin-based products.  It consists of a gypsum composite and acrylic resin polymer, making it a lightweight substitute to cast concrete.  It is fire resistant and we seal all our pieces with a surface sealant to makes them UV resistant and help protect against heat and moisture.

What is the finish of Jesmonite?

Jesmonite has a stone like finish, we sand our pieces with a high-grade sandpaper grit to ensure the smoothest finish.  This means our pieces have a smooth, almost soft feeling, matt finish.

What makes Jesmonite Eco?

Jesmonite is considered an Eco-Resin.  This is because it is a water-based compound that is solvent free and doesn’t contain any VOC’s which makes it much kinder on the environment.

What are VOC’s?

VOC’s or Volatile Organic Compounds, are gases that are released from certain solids or liquids.  These are chemical gases that contribute to polluting the atmosphere and can have adverse health effects.  Which is why we use Jesmonite at Astral Tides as it does not contain any of these harmful gases that a traditional resin might.

Is Jesmonite food safe?

Although Jesmonite does not contain solvents or VOC’s it has not been officially tested for food safety.  For this reason, we would advise against using our Jesmonite pieces for any foods or liquids.

Is Jesmonite suitable for Drinks/Liquids?

Jesmonite whilst suitable for using as plant pots is not suitable for containing liquids.  The material does still have a porous quality to it so will not be watertight.

Is Jesmonite dishwasher/microwave safe?

No, we would advise against putting any Jesmonite pieces in the dishwasher and/or microwave.

Do you sell moulds?

At Astral Tides we do design and make our own moulds.  At this time, we do not sell these and they are owned by Astral Tides and are not permitted for reproduction.  If you are interested in working together on something though, please do get in touch either via our contact form or by email.

How do I care for my Astral Tides jewellery?

To keep your sterling silver chain and other silver pendant/earring fittings in good condition, the best thing to do is to wear them!  The natural oils in your skin help protect against moisture and prevent tarnishing.

The oils in your skin will also keep your jesmonite pendants and earrings looking vibrant.  You can use a soft lint free cloth with coconut oil to gently wipe over the surface of the jesmonite to keep it looking its best.

You can wash your jewellery under warm running water to get rid of any dirt.  Make sure to dry your pieces thoroughly with a lint free cloth.  Ensure your jewellery is completely dry before storing in its pouch when you aren’t wearing it.

Avoid wearing your jewellery in the shower, bath or swimming and avoid contact with perfumes, sun creams and moisturisers as this can tarnish the surface.

How do I care for my Astral Tides homeware piece?

You will receive a care card with your order with the following information:

Your piece of Astral Tides Jesmonite homeware has been hand cast in the Astral Tides studio and sanded to a smooth finish. 

Each piece is sealed with a surface sealant that is lightweight, UV resistant and helps to protect your piece from heat and moisture. 

Should you need to clean your piece you can do so with a soft damp cloth and some soapy water (Do not submerge) then leave to dry.  Please avoid using any harsh chemicals or cleaners on your jesmonite pieces.

You can keep your jesmonite piece looking vibrant and rich in colour by wiping it over with Coconut Oil and a lint free cloth.
